While eDiscovery isn’t exactly a new concept these days, there aren’t many companies that have been supporting document review projects longer than iCONECT. Begun in 1999, iCONECT was one of the first companies to offer a purely web-based platform back when Netscape was competing with Internet Explorer. The founders of iCONECT knew the web was going to become a legitimate delivery utility and they are still innovating all these years later with the iCONECT-XERA system.
The main dashboard of iCONECT-XERA can be customized with activity and summary tiles that make the most sense for your needs. Once you select a case, you can further customize the tiles that appear – project managers can see review progress, while attorneys may choose to have a panel showing their “hot docs,” reviewer comments or reference materials. Review status is viewable on mobile devices (via XERA-CONECT), and the entire eDiscovery review platform is accessible via any device, including tablets.

A Thumbnail is Worth a Thousand Words
Jumping into a database reveals a fairly standard-looking linear list of documents in the Table View but iCONECT-XERA offers an impressive alternative by toggling into Thumbnail Preview. This view presents an image of the first page of each document in a grid, like viewing photos on your smartphone. This is an extremely useful option for quickly eyeballing important documents and the drag and drop feature makes it easy to organize them on the fly.
The columns in the Table View can be easily sorted, similar to the capability of Microsoft Excel. And some columns give you the ability to filter down the data that you’re viewing, such as the date column, which even offers a pop-up calendar to choose a date range.
iCONECT-XERA provides flexibility in data organization options. Two tools, Tags and Folders make it easy to segregate groups of data as needed. Since most legal professionals organize documents into folders either in paper or on a computer hard drive, this foldering approach makes complete sense. You can drag documents into folders whether you’re in the Table View or the Thumbnail Preview.
Folders in iCONECT-XERA are organized into Panels for better organization and can include sub-folders as well. Folders can be added on the fly for items such as Batches, Issues, Coding Fields, Custodians, Experts, etc. Users can then use the folders to quickly bring up a set of documents whose relationship might be difficult to identify via a search.

Data Visualization (iVIEW) and AI
If you prefer a visual approach for slicing and dicing your data, the iVIEW charts offer column graphs, bar graphs, and pie charts to plot such things as email dates by specific custodians, or the coding status of a folder by document type. In the upper right corner of the screen, you can toggle between the Table view of your database or iVIEW.
Many of these visuals are interactive, so for example, you can click-and-drag on a timeline to zero down to a more precise date range. And if you find an iVIEW visual that you like and want to re-visit throughout the life of the matter, you can add it as a tile to your case dashboard, so that it’s immediately accessible.
iCONECT regularly examines new technologies on the market to determine if they are worthwhile to incorporate into their platform, and provide more functionality for their customers. In early 2018, the company announced strategic partnerships with Heureka Software for proactively identifying sensitive data, and ayfie, Inc. to supply targeted analytics for big data.
Searching For The Documents You Need
iCONECT-XERA offers a unique search functionality called Facets. It displays document metadata values directly from the documents in the review set. You can filter by domains, email senders, date ranges, document types, etc. As in familiar shopping sites, like Amazon, the reviewer makes selections on check boxes. Many users will start with filtering data by Facets, since it’s just a few clicks to see emails sent from a particular address, or drill down into a specific file format.
The platform also offers a Quick Search box for simple words or phrases. Each cumulative search appears under the search box allowing you to quickly comprehend the searches you’ve built. Clicking the “x” on a box deletes the search component to see how that affects your results.
For more advanced searches, iCONECT-XERA offers a Custom Search Builder that gives you access to a multitude of options for searching text (with proximity, fuzzy and other text expansion options), metadata and work product. The Empty Field search quickly finds documents that are missing fields of important information, which is great for performing quality checks on data. Dictionary Lookup is a fantastic tool for examining the different spellings and mis-spellings of words so you can be confident you’re searching for all the right terms.
View Documents, Listen to Audio, and Watch Video
The Document View in iCONECT-XERA is packed with chunks of helpful information. The middle panel displays a document and different viewing tabs; the left panel displays a document list; and the right panel offers coding options, commenting and collaboration tools.
Word Marking lists the pre-configured color-coded terms and phrases highlighted in the document. Word Marking for specific words can be toggled off if a user needs to focus on specific themes. The right panel offers a Related tab to quickly see email threads, near-duplicates, or documents with similar concepts.
Document Compare is an exceptional feature in iCONECT-XERA. As the name implies, you can view two documents side-by-side to investigate the differences in both the text AND their metadata. You click the Compare tab on the left side of the screen to see the differences as a list, and you click the list item to jump to that location in the document.
With the Comments tab on the right side of the screen, users can select text in a document, highlight it, add a comment, and send a notification to other team members via email. The comment is associated with that section of the document, and a click on a link takes the user directly to that spot in the document. This is extremely helpful for calling attention to important passages and when collaborating on reviews with others.
The viewer handles more than documents – amazingly, iCONECT-XERA offers a full audio and video player inside the platform. As you play the media, you can add notes to specific sections of the audio file or video. In other words you can make comments at specific points in a video or audio file then jump directly to the important parts later, instead of manually scrolling through the media every time.

A Potential X-Factor for Finding The Right Documents
While iCONECT-XERA offers some powerful predictive coding tools, the Xmplar feature is a truly unique offering. As you slog through a database, you’ll inevitably find documents that are directly on-point and relevant. I certainly recommend putting those documents into a folder so that you can direct iCONECT to find similar documents based on your sub-collection.
But the Xmplar feature allows you to copy the most relevant and juiciest pieces of those documents and build your OWN custom, perfect exemplar document for the system to examine. You can copy paragraphs and text phrases from several documents and enter text freehand, to assemble an Xmplar document that iCONECT-XERA can use to find conceptually similar documents. It’s a brilliant concept and an innovative tool for showing lawyers how artificial intelligence can augment their knowledge.
Who Is iCONECT?
